Our Favorite Places to Urban Hike in San Francisco

If there’s anything this pandemic has taught us, is that there is an essential need for areas outside to exercise. Providing more open spaces, parks and trails is something that every city should strive for. The benefits of being able to train, stretch, and get our bodies moving while outdoors; not only gives us the extra oxygen we need, but gives us room to do so in a socially distant way, while inspiring others to become more active too! Hiking in the city has become a popular activity, not only as a way to stay healthy and fit, but also as an opportunity to socialize with friends. We thought after all of the urban hikes we’ve been on in the past year, it was high time to compile a list of our favorite places in the city by the bay.

Twin Peaks

We’re taking you to the highest heights first, with the geographic center of the city, at Twin Peaks. It’s a very popular tourist destination, but once you get beyond the tour buses and groups asking you to help take their picture for the view; Twin Peaks has some absolutely fantastic trails, that cover both the expansive city view, as well as the views towards the ocean. Lots of switchbacks, and not too many sharp inclines, as you navigate around the highest hillsides of San Francisco. For a great hike, start your trail at the base of Sutro Tower on Dellbrook Avenue, and finish your trail at Twin Peaks – Christmas Tree Point.

John McLaren Park

For an easier trail, that’s more like a stroll through enchanted woods, John McLaren Park is a great option. It’s a network of trails though forest, with an abundance of tree variety, small meadows, and a man made pond for your dogs to see the ducks on. If you have a four legged friend, this an ideal trail to take them on with you. Lots of places to stop and sit along the way, as well views of the bay and the city. For a great hike, start at Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, and finish at McLaren Park Water Tower.

Presidio of San Francisco

Presidio of San Francisco

For a little bit of a sea breeze, and vistas that look out to the Golden Gate Bridge, look no further than the trails of Presidio. Not as populated as trails around Lands End, this is a great option to have more room to navigate the network of trails, while remaining socially distant. Not many inclines here, and this as well is a great option to bring your dog along. Wander through the tall trees, providing a glimpse of Presidio and Marina houses, or travel further up and see the entire vista of Golden Gate Bridge and the bay filled with boats. For a great hike, start at Marina Heights and finish at Veterans Boulevard.

Glen Valley Park

Maybe those other hikes were just a walk in the park for you? No problem. Glen Valley Park provides, inclines, switchbacks, and thrilling views on a sharp cliff face. Not the best for pets, so maybe keep the pooch at home for this, but the hike is a real workout. The valley is situated near the geographic center of the city, but is much lower in elevation than Twin Peaks nearby. So, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you will feel the altitude change, as well as the way the fog will roll over Twin Peaks and settle sometimes below you in this valley. For a great hike, start at Glen Canyon Turquoise Way Trailhead by Turquoise Way and end at Glen Park Recreation Center.
